JOB TITLE: Dramaturg, Creative Engagement
DURATION: Year round, permanent, 3-days per week
REMUNERATION: $28,000-31,000 (21 hours/wk) + benefits, commensurate with experience
This is a Vancouver-based position that requires in-person and remote work at time of application. We encourage applications from individuals legally eligible to work in Canada. Relocation expenses are not available.

Job Description Reporting directly to the Artistic and Executive Director (AED), the Dramaturg, Creative Engagement’s (DCE) primary focus is researching, developing and leading in the dramaturgy of new plays at PTC. The DCE is responsible for the development, currency, and overall administration of programs designated by the AED. The DCE also dramaturgs specific projects and engages with the communities from which each project springs. The DCE is a collaborative partner to the AED and the Dramaturg, Public Engagement.
Competencies
- An adventurous theatre practice that includes complex dramaturgical skills in multiple genres from development through production
- Curiosity about how theatre responds to the contemporary condition in both form and content
- Theatre creation techniques in a variety of methods
- Aptitude to respond to the needs of artists
- Experience in program management (managing schedules and teams) and evaluation
- Experience in leading curatorial processes
- Excellent written and oral communication skills in creative and administrative contexts
- Demonstrated commitment to intersectional practice
- Substantial experience in live performance creation/production, including planning and implementation relationships with design, production, and presentation teams
Artistic: Collaborate with the Artistic and Executive Director and the Dramaturg, Public Engagement in developing both the artistic vision for the society and the annual programming plan. This includes:
- Initiate, lead, and evaluate programs to reflect the developing ecologies of theatre communities
- Provide curatorial leadership for artistic selection
- Plan and recommend allocation of dramaturgical resources
- Research and collaborate with artists and theatre companies
- Continuously expand their current knowledge of creators and creation models
- Provide one-on-one dramaturgy on specific projects
Program Management: Manage the Associates, WrightSpace and Community Collaborations programs, and other programs as developed, with the support and collaboration of the AED.
- Ensure that company protocols (land acknowledgments, community agreements, barrier reduction) are implemented for responsible program areas
- Oversee engagement with program participants, including play development coordination and casting
- Develop participation calls, lead selection committees, and assess protocols for engagement
- Supervise documentation of programs
- Track and report on program outcomes
Outreach and Community Engagement:
- Working with the Dramaturg, Public Engagement and the Communications Manager, develop individual program outreach and communications strategies
- Provide content for community engagement for responsible program areas
- Act as society representative, as delegated by the AED
Administration, Planning, and Finance:
- Participate in short and long term strategic and operational planning
- Provide grant content and proposal writing for projects falling under specific program management areas
- Report on program budgets for responsible program areas
Human Resource Management:
- Coordinate and supervise Artist in Residence programs
- Hire and supervise contract program dramaturgs for responsible program areas
