Two-Spirit Roles & Responsibilities Workshop

Two-Spirit Roles & Responsibilities Workshop

Date & Time: March 27th, 2025, at 6:00 PM (Zoom)

Workshop Description:

This workshop explores traditional Anishinaabe teachings on gender roles and responsibilities from 200 years ago. It highlights how roles were based on individual strengths rather than gender, emphasizing the historical neutrality of these roles. The Anishinaabe language also reflects this, lacking gender-based distinctions in its structure. Teachings on Two-Spirit identity explain its long-standing presence in human existence and its deep spiritual significance.

The workshop also addresses intergenerational disconnections faced by Two-Spirit people. It sheds light on the loss of teachings and the challenges of reclaiming identity through ceremony and sobriety. The facilitator shares personal experiences as a Two-Spirit individual, fulfilling roles as a jingle dress dancer, Sundancer, buffalo dancer, and ceremony leader. This session offers an authentic space for learning, healing, and reconnecting with traditional ways.
