Indigenous Artist

Victoria May (Red River Métis-Michif) is a dancer and graduate student, a daughter, an auntie and Mother. Victoria’s Maternal grandmother, Irene Vermette grew up on the Road Allowance, in a place known as the Fox Farm (now called Nordale) outside Prince Albert, Saskatchewan and is a citizen of the Manitoba Métis Federation.

Born in Ottawa, she began her dance training and early dance career at the Royal Winnipeg Ballet and has performed with ballet and contemporary dance companies in Europe and Canada for over 30 years. She dances for A’no:wara Dance Theatre/Barbara Diabo and is a collective member and co-organizer of Maqahatine, a group of Indigenous contemporary dancers based in Tio’tia:ke and is a student of Métis dance artist Yvonne Chartrand. She is a currently a PhD in the INDI program at the Concordia University in Montreal (Tio’tia:ke). Her current research-creation ‘Kiwaapamitinaawaaaw’ is a poem, and love letter to her ancestors, its about embodying Michif and the dances that guided her home.
