Indigenous Artist

Joey (Johanna) Silver comes from a long ancestral line of rebels, adventurers and change-makers. Her own passion for storytelling and filmmaking draws inspiration not only from her own lived experiences, but those of her ancestors. As a Metis filmmaker, Joey has demonstrated a commitment to sharing the stories of her Metis ancestors through authentic and compelling cinematic films. Her most recent career highlights include attending Prime Time (2025) in Ottawa as a member of the Creatives Empowered delegation, participating in Wapakoni’s Pipon Cohort (Fall 2024), and attending Wapikoni’s Mamowi indigenous filmmaker’s conference in Montreal (Spring 2025). Joey has shown her dedication to the local Edmonton filmmaking community by serving as Programming Chair on the Film And Video Arts Society of Alberta (FAVA) board of directors since 2024, and further from home contributing as an adjudicator for the 2024 St. John’s Women’s International Film Festival. Her most recent short film “Sister” has screened at the Regina International Film Festival’s Winter Selection and the Los Angeles International Children’s Film Festival.
