A champion of vocal versatility, Camryn Dewar, M. Mus., is an accomplished vocalist of many genres, including contemporary classical, opera, musical theatre, and jazz. From Stony Mountain, Manitoba, she champions the works of contemporary composers, and her repertoire includes a wealth of music by Indigenous and living composers across North America. Hailed as an “incredible performer and instrument” (Jeffrey Gall), she takes great pride in her Indigenous (Red River Métis Nation) heritage and is committed to using her artistry as a catalyst to uplift and amplify Indigenous voices. As a Fulbright Scholar, Camryn is advancing research in Indigenous opera and equal representation, and recently toured the state of New Jersey presenting her groundbreaking research in a highly acclaimed lecture recital series. She is now touring this innovative and unique lecture recital series across Canada from 2025-2027.
Camryn is thankful for the many opportunities she has had to perform incredible new operas. Notable recent performances include social justice opera Blind Injustice by Scott Davenport Richards and David Cote at Jazz at Lincoln Centre, The Grapes of Wrath at Carnegie Hall, where she was Assistant to Tony Award-winning Music Director Ted Sperling, Indians on Vacation at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity, Li Keur: Riel’s Heart of the North at Manitoba Opera, and Living Music at the Canadian Museum for Human Rights.
Camryn has a history of Indigenous advocacy, most recently working as Assistant on the Montclair State University’s Indigenous Justice Field School, as Indigenous Community Ambassador and Performer for Manitoba Opera, and as Cultural Advisor for opera companies Manitoba Opera and Opera NUOVA. For her vision and drive, she was awarded the Association of American University Women Scholarship, the Modern Métis Woman Scholarship, the Association of Opera in Canada Fellowship, and the InPath: N’we Jinan Artworks Fellowship. She has done acclaimed Emerging Artist programs with the Banff Centre for the Arts, Bel Canto in Tuscany, Agassiz Chamber Music Festival, Northern Lights Music Festival, Opera NUOVA, and Virtuosi Concerts. Camryn is incredibly thankful to the communities and organizations that have uplifted and supported her through her journey in classical music and advocacy.
Camryn received her Master of Music (Vocal Performance) degree from Montclair State University in New Jersey, USA, under the tutelage of renowned mezzo-soprano Barbara Dever, and her Bachelor of Music (Vocal Performance) degree from the University of Manitoba, under the tutelage of Mel Braun.
