Anang Binesi, an Anishinaabe percussionist from the Manidoo Bawitigong First Nations of Treaty #3, has been deeply involved in music from a young age. Their journey began with private piano and vocal lessons, along with active participation in high school bands and ensembles, providing a strong foundation for their musical development. This early exposure and dedication to music have led Anang Binesi to pursuing an Bachelor's degree in Percussion Performance.
Anang Binesi's musical interests are strongly influenced by their Anishinaabe teachings. They actively incorporate cultural traditions into their work to challenge and transform the colonial frameworks of classical music and music education. By bringing their Anishinaabe perspectives and practices into their work, Anang Binesi is exploring and expanding new methods of learning, teaching, creating, and experiencing music. Their contributions not only honour their culture but also aim to expand the music industry, aiming to create indigenous spaces in music. Through their unique engagement with classical training and Indigenous knowledge, Anang Binesi is shaping a more dynamic and indigenized future for music and sound education.
