Winnipeg Arts Council

The annual WINNIPEG ARTS COUNCIL AWARDS is a celebration that recognizes and promotes the arts, artists and partnerships that make Winnipeg a centre for cultural achievement.

Three awards will recognize excellence and creativity in the arts:  the ON THE RISE Award, the MAKING A MARK Award and the MAKING A DIFFERENCE Award. Each award recipient will receive a cash prize of $2,500.  The ARTS CHAMPION Award will honour an individual, a business or an organization that has demonstrated sustained support to the arts in Winnipeg. The award will be a unique work of art.

The National Aboriginal Achievement Awards

The National Aboriginal Achievement Awards recognize Aboriginal professionals who demonstrate outstanding career achievement in diverse occupations, building self esteem and pride as well as providing valuable role models for Aboriginal youth. Supported by the public and private sectors, this Aboriginal initiative represents the highest honour the community bestows upon its own achievers.

Each year 14 recipients are selected by a national jury for their outstanding accomplishments in various disciplines, as well as specific recognition to one outstanding youth and a lifetime achiever. The 14 recipients are then honoured at a nationally televised gala awards ceremony.

Deadline: Monday, June 27, 2011 (midnight for online nominations, 5:00 p.m. EST for paper and fax submissions to our Toronto office). The letters of support must be physically in the NAAF Toronto office by the stated deadline, no postmarks accepted.

The British Columbia Creative Achievement Award for First Nations’ Art

The British Columbia Creative Achievement Award for First Nations’ Art is a juried competition celebrating artistic excellence and highlighting the cultural significance of the arts of the First Nations in British Columbia.

Up to five awards of $5,000 will be presented to artists affiliated with BC First Nations working in BC traditional or contemporary visual arts in such fields as, but not limited to, carving, weaving, beading, jewellery, photography, painting, masks, sculpture, stonework, print making, basket making and textiles.

The selection will be based on the submission package and the following criteria:

  • Artistic excellence
  • Creativity, originality, innovation
  • Interpretation of First Nations’ culture
  • Aesthetics

John Hobday Awards in Arts Management

The John Hobday Awards in Arts Management are made possible by a $1 million donation from The Samuel and Saidye Bronfman Family Foundation. Two $10,000 awards are presented each year and allow recipients to enhance their own professional development by taking part in a recognized program, seminar, or workshop; or to be mentored by another arts administrator outside their own organization. The competition is open to both established and mid-career arts managers.

Molson Prizes – Dance, Theatre – Inter-Arts

Two prizes of $50,000 each are awarded annually to distinguished Canadians, one in the arts and the other in the social sciences and humanities. Funded from the income of a $1 million endowment given to the Canada Council by the Molson Family Foundation, the Molson Prizes encourage Canadians honoured with this distinction to continue contributing to the cultural and intellectual heritage of Canada.
