Almighty Voice in Saskatoon |

.
Native Earth Performing Arts’ brilliant 2009 production of Daniel David Moses’s seminal play finally arrives in home territory, after successful tours to Halifax, Winnipeg, Edmonton, Montreal, Kingston, and London (Ontario & England).
Michael Greyeyes directs the captivating Derek Garza as the accidental Cree martyr Almighty Voice and award winning Saskatchewan-born PJ Prudat as his fierce young wife White Girl. Two startlingly different acts – the first set on the Saskatchewan prairie in 1897, the second set in a abandoned industrial school at Duck Lake in 1950’s – challenge our ideas of what we think we know about our own history.
“jarring, offensive, funny and ultimately uplifting”
The Coast, Halifax
“By its end, the poetic, imaginative Almighty Voice And His Wife has turned into a one-ring circus. And that’s a good thing”
NOW Magazine, Toronto
Almighty Voice and His Wife plays for three shows only at the BackStage Stage, Frank and Ellen Remai Arts Centre, 100 Spadina Crescent East, Saskatoon

Writing Fiction with Joseph Boyden |
|
.
This course, geared towards First Nations, Inuit, and Métis students, is designed to explore the art of writing fiction. For the first half of the semester, in a series of exercises that highlight the elements of craft, students will explore issues such as point of view, the balancing of scene, exposition, and dialogue, character development, suspension of disbelief, development of symbolism and metaphor, and development of plot.
Over the course of the semester, students will also work toward creating a full-fledged short story. The second half of the semester will become, more or less, a “classic” writing workshop where students are expected to write and present original and self-contained pieces of short fiction to the class for our discussion and analysis. Everyone in workshop is expected to write and post a thorough critique of that week’s stories and then enter into a lively dialogue regarding the pieces.
As this course is geared toward developing First Nations, Inuit, and Métis voices in Canadian fiction, the assumption is that much of the subject matter of student stories will deal with aboriginal issues, worldviews, situations, and characters. While this, of course, does not have to be the case (a writer, after all, should be allowed to write about whatever subject matter he or she is fascinated by), when it is the case, a special emphasis will be placed on breaking through the stereotypes too often associated with aboriginal fiction
Apply Now!
This course runs from January 4 – April 2012. Applications are open to UBC students as well as those who are not UBC students but are able to register with the university under UBC Access Studies or as unclassified students.
For more information or to apply, please contact Andrew Gray at UBC Creative Writing (optres.mfa@ubc.ca) with a short (no more than 500 words) sample of your writing.
Applications must be received by December 21, 2011.
