Native Earth Performing Arts, Canada’s oldest professional Aboriginal theatre, is looking for an Artistic Associate to help lead us into the next twenty-five years.

The Artistic Associate will work closely with and report to the Artistic Director, and work closely with the rest of the Native Earth team to achieve the vision of the company. Read more for details pertaining to the position’s responsibilities and qualifications.

Artistic Direction

  • Collaborate with Artistic Director in artistic discussions around season planning, casting, artistic visioning
  • Participate in the assessment of scripts, both solicited (for Weesageechak festival, Theatre Creators Reserve) and unsolicited
  • Work towards growing and strengthening the company’s presence and impact in the community, including relationships with other organization within and outside of the arts, through attendance at a variety of public events
  • Under the direction of the Artistic Director and/or General Manager, manage artistic outreach programs such as Made-To-Order Theatre program and development of new works through the Young Voices program
  • Provide input in auditions and workshops as appropriate
  • Contribute to grant-writing and other fundraising activity
  • Proactively seek new scripts works by Aboriginal artists for production or development
  • Provide artistic support to Playwright-In-Residence and other artists as appropriate
  • Maintains networks and communications with other companies to stay apprised of current trends and changes within the artistic community

Administration (Organizational Management)

  • Work with the Artistic Director and General Manager to refine the organization’s strategic plan on an ongoing basis with long and short-term objectives for approval by the Board of Directors

Public Relations

  • Participate in strategies around publicity with Artistic Director and Marketing Coordinator for the development of company, production and special event marketing and promotion plans
  • Participate in educational and other outreach activities
  • Network and liaise with other theatre companies, the theatre community and the Aboriginal community
  • Acts as a representative of the Company through attendance at workshops, conferences and community events and through speaking engagements and interviews with the media
