Featured in the Vancouver Sun (October 2010) as one among “ten talents to watch out for in the arts,” Starr Muranko is making waves, big waves. Muranko, drawn to her mother’s Moose Cree ancestry since childhood, practises and choreographs traditional & contemporary Indigenous dance. Muranko is committed to supporting Indigenous people and the living expression of their cultures through dance, music and story-telling. In all her work, she honours her mixed heritage of Metis, Cree and German.

She has trained and performed throughout British Columbia’s Lower Mainland, San Francisco, and as far away as New Zealand and the Andes in Peru. She holds a BFA in Dance from SFU’s School for the Contemporary Arts and has trained internationally at the Performing Arts School in Ghana, West Africa, as well as the American Conservatory of Theatre in San Francisco. Starr is committed to supporting Indigenous people and the living expression of their cultures through dance, music and story telling.

Muranko is currently dancing with Raven Spirit Dance, performing most recently in “Gathering Light” at the Scotia Dance Centre (Vancouver), the Weesageechk Begins to Dance Festival (Toronto), and the Dancing on the Edge Festival (Vancouver) in July 2010.

Muranko’s choreographic work has been shown at the Vancouver International Dance Festival, LIFT Community Dance Series, and the Talking Stick Festival. She is a proud member of the Dancers of Damelahamid (Gitksan) dance collective, with whom she has performed in New Zealand and most recently at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics.
